Racial Equity in Assessments
Presentation Category
01 WORKING WITH THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK
Session Description
As concerns have been growing about racial inequities in American society, property taxes are becoming an emerging issue for assessors – how they are set, administered and collected. For example, are lower valued homes chronically over-assessed so certain homeowners are paying proportionately more in property taxes for the same services as high-value homeowners?
In this session, we’ll discuss how racial disparities might appear in the property assessment and tax setting process, what’s behind the disparities, and how assessors try to correct or avoid bias through their assessment practices, as well as hiring diverse staff.
Audience Expertise
