The state of Vermont has 262 towns, most of them small. The Vermont Department of Taxes Division of Property Valuation and Review has assisted towns in acquiring computer capabilities to aid in the assessment process. Along with rapid technological change and a new bill calling for properties to be appraised at 100 percent market value, and proposed that the accuracy of appraisals be maintained at specific standards. It was clear that serious efforts would have to be made to ensure that the towns could meet t hose standards. This article discusses the state of Vermont’s plan to replace existing CAMA systems with a new state-wide system.
