Brief Abstract

With technical expertise in both property valuation and mapping technologies, local assessors are well positioned to advocate for legislative and policy changes related to property valuation and taxation. In light of historic property value changes in Ohio in 2023, the Franklin County Auditor’s Office used GIS technology to highlight the neighborhoods experiencing the greatest property tax burdens, urging local and state policymakers to create assistance mechanisms in the short-term and address the legislative landscape that places a heavy emphasis on property taxation as a source of local funding. Maps and supplemental tools were tailored for and to be used by state and local elected officials, partners and advocates, and potential funders to create awareness for the need for property tax relief both imminently and in the future.
